Top Films of 2018 YOU should NOT have MISSED!!!

Updated: Jan 22, 2019

2018 has been an interesting year for movies. We witnessed some good, some bad and some downright teriible films. That being said, we achieved some fantastic progress in terms of diversity, story telling and type of films being accepted by audiences world-wide. They made us laugh, cry, scream in shock or hold our seats – these are our top picks for 2018. 1. Roma

An autobiographical film by the Oscar winning Alfonso Cuarón, Roma is a triumph in all and any aspect of film making. This film is set in the early 1970s, Mexico City centered around an indigenous house maid to a white middle class family. A deeply personal story translates so beautifully to an epic proportion by this genius filmmaker - While it might not have the frills of an inter-galactic voyage, Roma reminds us the power of cinema by telling a seemingly small human stories of magnum proportions.

2. Black Panther

This entry into the Marvel universe while it is the tale of the becoming of a Superhero, it is almost radically different from all other superheroes. Not just that the titular hero, is of colour but the film features an almost all-black cast, an all-female Royal King’s guard and a brilliant female inventor/engineer and it is set in the fictional nation of Wakanda (and not the United States). Featuring talented new actors as well as screen legends, the “Black Panther” stands on its own and offers even more – a seriously politically charged villain and an emotional showdown. Black Panther is a must watch for all.

Crazy Rich Asians

This was one of Hollywood’s big moments, an Asian filmmaker telling an Asian-American tale with Asians cast in all the leading roles. This film is a true Rom-Com at heart and while it wasn’t without flaws, it redeemed itself by thankfully not giving into stereotypes - the shining gem being a truly strong heroine who did not need saving, was so independent and addressed problems with dignity. What a truly enjoyable experience it is to watch!

Avengers - Infinity War

The second last edition that makes the culmination to almost a decade long relationship with Marvel super hero movies is one that doesn’t waste time in establishing itself. The pace has been set, the story path charted, Thanos is finally here! The story easily jumps from universes and galaxies, tied together only by Thanos’ determination to collect all the Infinity Stones. Battles and epic showdowns are exposed with ease and a gripping cliffhanger is what keeps us hooked on for more. This film might be a little confusing for young viewers but still an amazing watch for any superhero fan.

A Star is Born

Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut on this 4th remake of this story is one not to be taken lightly. A tragic love story, centered around good music weighs heavily on the pitfalls of substance abuse, mental health, depression. A burnt out Rockstar decides to lead a talented underdog of an artist to the path to success and they fall in love - this film checks all the boxes in a love story, and while it seems like a story told time and again, it doesn’t feel old or boring. As a trained singer, Lady Gaga is the perfect fit for the role and not surprising also displays some serious acting chops – coupled with a beautiful chemistry with Cooper, this film is beautiful to watch and experience.

A Quiet Place

Most horror films easily resort to cheap jump scares to get a reaction from the audience, A Quiet Place, gets a reaction from the audience with literally a well written, directed and brilliantly acted film – in a near dystopian future, humans are being hunted by vicious alien creatures that are blind but hunt based on sound – A family trying to cope and survive, communicating only via sign language, this story not without its pitfalls wastes no time in setting the table and pushes you straight for the course, resulting in a purely thrilling ride.
